The History of the Gamble House

The Gamble House, the most complete and best-preserved work of American Arts and Crafts architects Charles and Henry Greene.

The Gamble House is internationally recognized for its design; it’s considered a masterpiece embodying the Art & Crafts movement that was popular in the United States at the turn of the century. The Greene brothers were influenced by the Japanese architectural styles they had seen on display at the 1893 World Fair in Chicago that represented nature, simplicity, and beauty. Greene & Greene’s signature design style thus incorporated both the Arts & Crafts movement and Japanese aesthetics, with artistic designs that used natural materials, embellishments, and engravings, as well as building designs that included extensions of indoor living to the outdoors via large patios and porches. Everything in the home, cabinetry, wood paneling, rugs, lighting, furniture, and the spectacular front door was custom designed by the Greene brothers.

After touring the Gamble House, Seattle architects Scott Stemper and Associates, specializing in Craftsman design, were commissioned. Followed by construction with renowned Dovetail Construction of Seattle, this would be the company’s only primary project for the next 2 years incorporating 12 full time master carpenters. All woodworking done in shop on premise and no schedule deadlines, only attention to painstaking detail. The goal was to create a masterpiece Arts & Crafts home to last 200 years.

Extensive landscape and concrete work by NW Landscapes and Elite Concrete. Over 5000 sq feet of entertainment patios including an outdoor sport/pickle ball court, elevated “infinity” patio and fire pit ring patio surround home – all with 270 degree views, and large flagstone wood burning fire pit area in lawn area. Over 3500 linear feet of underground irrigation and outdoor lighting and 1 million pounds of premium sandy loam topsoil for landscaped area. High efficiency 10 KW sunken solar field and auto-backup generator. Free water from high-volume well with additional irrigation holding tank. Downstairs living area currently has a 4th bedroom and gym or study, opens to a beautiful patio and easily converted to a mother-in-law apartment.

Backyard features a gorgeous 90+ year old Japanese Maple tree, centered in the dining room window. Over 900 feet driveway lined with maturing Japanese Maple trees and an additional 1500 linear feet of Giant Green Granite boulders line driveway and terraced lawn – all from Granite Falls, WA. Large, stunning Sequoia trees on the property. Reflection pond with 5 waterfalls and underwater lights. Secluded and serenely quiet, yet close in location, protected by hidden driveway.
